IELTS Exam Overview

IELTS Full-Form: International English Language Testing System

What is the IELTS Exam?

IELTS is an English language exam that must be taken by foreign applicants who want to study or work in a country where English is the primary language of communication. The UK, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada are the most common nations where IELTS is recognised for university applications. The exam primarily assesses the test-taker’s ability to communicate in the four core English language abilities of hearing, reading, speaking, and writing. IDP Education Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment jointly own and administer the IELTS exam test.

The IELTS exam can be taken on a computer or on paper. Those who take the IELTS computer-based test do so for the Listening, Writing, and Reading portions. The Speaking test, on the other hand, is done in front of a qualified examiner.
  • With the computer-based IELTS, there are more test dates to select from, and results are available in 3-5 days.
  • Those who want to take the IELTS on paper will complete the Reading, Writing, and Listening parts on paper with HB pencils or pens.
  • The Speaking test, on the other hand, is done in front of a trained IELTS examiner.

Information About IELTS Exam

The IELTS exam Srilanka is required for migration and academic reasons in English-speaking nations such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada. It is the only English Language Test that UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has authorised for visa applicants applying both within and outside the UK. Many students are perplexed as to why IELTS scores are necessary. The basic explanation is that foreign institutions and visa issuing agencies want to ensure that you will have no communication problems while in the country.

You must demonstrate an excellent comprehension and command of the English language, which is why your total IELTS score is so significant. Another prevalent misunderstanding among students is whether or not IELTS is a required exam. No, IELTS is not required for all university applications. Many institutions may not even require IELTS results for admission. However, keep in mind that if you do not take IELTS, your prospects of obtaining a student visa may decrease since visa authorities may not be convinced of your English competence in the absence of IELTS exam results. As a result, it is safer to take IELTS and strive for at least 6 bands overall.

You can take the IELTS exam once a week with the British Council or IDP (four times a month). The global timetable for the British Council and IDP test dates is 48 days each year.
